Totals describe volume
Season totals reward availability and workload. That is valuable information, but a player with 20 appearances will naturally accumulate more than a player with 12.
PTN keeps totals visible while also calculating per-game rates so users can separate volume from output per appearance.
Recent form belongs beside season form
A player’s role can change during a season because of injuries, position changes or tactical adjustments. PTN therefore shows recent appearances separately from the full-season line where game-level data is available.
The aim is not to overreact to a small sample. It is to make a genuine change in workload or role visible.
Context before ranking
The same raw statistic can mean different things across positions. A halfback’s kicking metres and a prop’s post-contact metres are not competing for the same job.
That is why PTN’s player rating is role-aware rather than a single universal formula applied to every player in the competition.
Where PTN uses official NRL statistics, the raw inputs are identified as source data. Ratings, percentiles, model probabilities and interpretation are Play The Numbers calculations.
